Pterostilbene is a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound with the chemical formula C₁₆H₁₆O₃, a molecular weight of 256.30 g/mol, and a CAS number of 537-42-8. It was initially discovered in sandalwood, which is how it acquired the Chinese name "紫檀芪" (Zǐ Tán Qí). It is also found in plants such as blueberries and grapes. Nowadays, it is mostly synthetically produced.

Pterostilbene effectively scavenges free radicals and reduces oxidative stress. Its Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) is remarkably strong, even surpassing known antioxidants like Vitamin C and Glabridin. It also activates the Nrf2 pathway, upregulating the expression of various antioxidant enzymes (e.g., SOD, glutathione peroxidase) within the body, thereby enhancing the body's own antioxidant defense system

2. Anti-inflammatory: 

Pterostilbene can mitigate inflammatory responses by inhibiting inflammatory pathways such as NF-κB, reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory factors including cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and nitric oxide (NO)

Studies indicate that pterostilbene aids in improving glucose and lipid metabolism. Animal experiments have shown that it can enhance insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar levels, promote weight loss in obese and type 2 diabetic animals, and its efficacy in improving blood sugar is comparable to metformin in some studies. It also reduces low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and increases high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)

Pterostilbene has been found in animal studies to reduce the formation of atherosclerotic plaques, improve vascular endothelial function, and help lower blood pressure. Some limited human studies also suggest that pterostilbene supplementation may positively affect blood pressure in adults with high cholesterol

Some preclinical studies have explored pterostilbene's potential to inhibit amyloid-β plaque formation associated with Alzheimer's disease, indicating it may alleviate amyloid-β-induced cognitive dysfunction by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway

6. Melanin Inhibition and Skin Protection: 

Pterostilbene inhibits tyrosinase activity (more effectively than arbutin and VC), reduces melanin production, and possesses anti-glycation properties. It also mitigates UV-induced skin cell damage and DNA damage, leading to its widespread use in whitening, anti-aging, and sun protection skincare products

7. Potential Adjunctive Antitumor: 

Some studies have found that pterostilbene can inhibit the growth and proliferation of various cancer cells (e.g., colon, skin, cervical, bladder cancer) in vitro and in animal models, induce apoptosis, and potentially inhibit tumor angiogenesis. It is important to note that most of these studies are in the preclinical stage, and it should not be considered a treatment for cancer
